MONTEVERDE
Positioned atop the Continental Divide in the Western part of
Costa Rica, this private reserve extends down both the Caribbean and
Pacific Slopes.
A group of quakers in the 1950's in conjunction with the
Tropical Science Center, a Costa Rican nonprofit scientific
research and education association based in San Jose established
in 1962, designated Monteverde as a biological reserve.
The altitude varies from about 600 meters in the lower
areas of the Penas Blancas River, to 1842 meters on
Cerro Tres Amigos. The variable climate and large altitude
gradient has result in very high biodiversity.
